Software Engineering Manager
Location: Central Scotland (Hybrid role – 1 to 2 days in the office, likely Edinburgh).
Key Focus Areas: AI & Computer Vision, Real-Time Video Processing & Streaming, SaaS Platforms, Cloud Infrastructure (AWS), DevOps, Mission-Critical Systems, Hands-On Development, Team Leadership.
Position Overview:
Join a pioneering force in safety technology as a Software Engineering Manager — a pivotal leadership role supporting our client’s strategic expansion into Central Scotland.
Our client is a recognized innovator in AI-driven detection and emergency response, transforming passive security cameras into proactive life-saving systems through patented visual AI. This hybrid position offers the chance to shape the engineering team, collaborating closely with the VP of Engineering to define the technical vision, drive roadmap execution, and maintain high-quality delivery — while staying hands-on with platform development in a fast-evolving, mission-critical SaaS environment.
The ideal candidate brings proven leadership nurturing small, high-impact engineering teams in purpose-driven organizations focused on safety and real-world impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with product, leadership, and security stakeholders to shape the technical roadmap, balancing AI/computer vision advancements, DevOps excellence, real-time infrastructure, and technical debt reduction with new feature innovation in threat detection and emergency automation.
- Lead agile sprint planning, backlog grooming, and high-velocity delivery processes that prioritize speed, zero-downtime reliability, and sustainable quality in a SaaS platform serving mission-critical use cases.
- Contribute hands-on as needed — from architecture and design reviews to coding in core areas like video processing pipelines, AI model integration, and backend services.
- Establish and evolve engineering best practices, coding standards, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and quality processes tailored to a scaling SaaS company in the security and emergency response space.
- Translate complex business and safety requirements into robust, scalable technical solutions that integrate with diverse camera systems, access controls, and notification channels.
- Champion agile methodologies, DevOps automation, infrastructure-as-code, and real-time system resilience to support 24/7 operations.
- Support talent acquisition, onboarding, and growth as the team expands in this high-growth environment.
- Cultivate a collaborative, accountable, innovative, and purpose-driven culture where engineering directly contributes to saving lives and enhancing safety.
Skills & Qualifications:
Required:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership role (team lead, tech lead, or manager).
- Proven track record delivering scalable SaaS applications, ideally in security, real-time, or mission-critical domains.
- Strong expertise with modern web/full-stack technologies (e.g., React, Node.js, Go, Python, PostgreSQL) and real-time protocols (WebSockets, MQTT, REST).
- Deep hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS services like Lambda, ECS/Fargate, S3, RDS, etc.), containerization (Docker), IaC (Terraform), CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), and DevOps practices.
- Proficiency in real-time video streaming/processing, APIs for media handling, or distributed systems.
- Comfort thriving in small, cross-functional teams — balancing hands-on coding with people leadership.
- Solid background in agile development, automated testing, CI/CD, and building reliable, high-availability systems.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and mentoring skills.
Preferred:
- Experience scaling engineering teams in high-growth SaaS or security tech environments.
- Strong familiarity with AWS cloud-native architectures and distributed systems.
- Background in mission-critical, high-stakes applications (e.g., public safety, emergency systems).
- Exposure to AI/computer vision, video analytics, real-time data processing, or related technologies (e.g., threat detection, streaming pipelines).
If you’re a passionate, innovative engineering leader in Central Scotland eager to drive impact in life-saving AI and emergency response technology, we want to hear from you.
